Is there more to Zika than we first thought?

This morning as I watched the news I saw that multiple public officials are now stating that the Zika Virus is scarier than they first thought, and the more they look into it the more concern they have. Anytime I hear health officials publicly use the word scary it concerns me. As we well know and with good reason more often than not health officials will try to find that balance between public awareness and fear. The exception to this tends to be with person to person communicable diseases (such as AIDS) where they will try to utilize fear as a measure of reduction (also a reasonable approach). Nonetheless to hear them use the word ‘scarier’ on an insect borne disease definitely got my attention and will have me giving alot more effort to understanding this relatively new highlighted threat.

Let’s look at a little of what we do know about the disease.
From the BBC this morning

A wider range of birth defects has been linked to the virus, said Dr Anne Schuchat of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

And the mosquitoes that carry the virus could travel to more US states than previously thought, she said.

The current Zika outbreak began almost a year ago in Brazil.

It has been linked to thousands of birth defects there and has spread widely through the Americas.

Obviously there is a concern for pregnant women which could have a devastating effect on a society, however this new ‘scare’ from the officials makes me question whether there is more to this than we yet know. My intuition tells me that there well may be a concern that they are trying to verify before going public. Then again it may be just as they are laying it out. Either way do what you can to avoid your exposure and risk to this new nasty bug!

Here is a link to the CDC page describing the virus and how best to avoid it as well as passing it.
